Allene Nason Yates of Shelby, MS , daughter of Mabel Reed Nason and Dr. Allen Richard Nason , died Friday, August 3, 2012, in Jackson, MS. Graveside services will be held Sunday, August 5 at 3:00 P.M. at the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, MS.
Allene was born March 7, 1915, in Tomnolen, MS, graduating from Delta State University and receiving her Master's Degree from the University of MS . She taught school at Mathiston, Cleveland, Shelby, Duncan, and retired from the Clarksdale schools.
Numerous memberships included Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Colonial Wars, Daughters of the American Colonists, Delta Kappa Gamma, Bowie Family Historical Society, Bolivar County Historical Society, Missouri Historical Society, Tennessee Historical Society, and Delta Council.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Watt Yates, Jr, of Shelby (1987) and sister, Augusta Nason Long of Memphis. Survivors include sons, Joseph Watt Yates III (Mary) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Dr. Allen Richard Yates (DeVane) of Jackson. Grandchildren include Lt. Commander Joseph Yates (Maggie), Richard Yates (Mindy), Henry Yates(Jennifer), Caroline Mason(Brad), and 12 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to French Camp Academy, 1 Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745, or the Shelby Cemetery Maintenance Fund, P.O. Box 88, Shelby, MS 38774.
