Alma Mize, 91, passed away May 1, 2010 at Long Term Care in Cleveland. Funeral service will be at Ray Funeral Home, Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jimmy Breland and Rev. Milton Byrd officiating. Visitation will be at Ray Funeral Home from 10-11 a.m.
Ms. Mize was born on June 13, 1918 in Eupora, MS to Henry Ruben Brown and Maude Alma Burton Brown. She was one of ten siblings.
Ms. Mize graduated from Boyle High School and attended King's Daughters nursing school in Greenwood. She married the late William E. âBobâ Mize in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Ms. Mize worked for many years with her husband managing country clubs in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi. Mr. Mize oversaw the club's golfing program and Ms. Mize supervised the club restaurant. In 1970 they settled in the Jackson, MS area and opened the Country Squire Restaurant in Pearl. They retired to Pace in 1977 to be closer to family, and continued to operate restaurants in the area, including the Catfish Kitchen in Boyle.
Ms. Mize was a superb cook and a very gracious hostess. She loved playing bridge and dominos and telling jokes. Her greatest love was entertaining the many guests who visited them over the years.
Ms. Mize was an active member in the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. She is survived by her sister, Ruby Brown Jones of Cleveland, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all.
Pall bearers will be John Miller, Ed Miller, Lee Tedder, Tommy Naron, Tommy Barrett, and Lester Brown Gammil. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Cleveland, and Palmer Children's Home.
