Mrs. Betty Jean Jones Malatesta, 82, of Shelby, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Baptist Desoto Hospital. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelby. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Kent Bowlds officiating. Interment will be in Shelby Cemetery. Mrs. Malatesta was born in Sunflower County, MS on April 10, 1933, to David A. Jones and Mattie Skinner Jones. On December 7, 1954, she married Willie Guido Malatesta at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shelby. She was a dedicated wife and mother until her children left home; then she pursued a career in retail for many years while working at Walmart. Mrs. Malatesta loved to cook, and she could bake amazing cakes. She brought her cakes to many bake sales and church functions. On holidays, she made the best divinity. Most importantly, she loved her grandchildren dearly as well as their friends.
She is preceded in death by her son, Mark Vincent Jones; parents, David A. Jones and Mattie Skinner Jones; brothers; David Jones, Jack Jones, and Robert Louis Jones; sisters, Martha Jane Jones Pate, Francis Jones Prewitt, and Dorothy Jones Pate. Mrs. Malatesta is survived by her husband, Willie Guido Malatesta of Shelby; daughter, Paula Malatesta Edgerley (Jerry Lee) of Hernando; sons, Pete Malatesta of Shelby, and Tommy Guido Malatesta (Renee) of Shelby; grandchildren, John Michael Pope and Jason Paul Pope both of Southaven, Kyle Edgerly of Cleveland, and William Peter Malatesta and Benjaman Julien Malatesta both of Olive Branch; brothers, Bernie B. Jones (Gladys) of Cleveland, MS, Cecil C. Jones of Cleveland, MS and sisters, JoAnn Jones Silverblatt (Norman) of Kenner, LA, Carol Sue Jones of Cleveland, MS, and Linda Jones Jefcoat (Larry) of Cleveland, MS. Pallbearers will be John Michael Pope, Jason Paul Pope, William Peter Malatesta, Benjaman Julien Malatesta, Dane Jones, and Kurt Malatesta.
