Billy G. Wachter, Sr.

Mr. Billy G. Wachter, Sr., 86, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Delta Nursing and Rehab in Cleveland, MS. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Ray Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Haney officiating. Interment will be in Shaw City Cemetery. Billy was born on April 18, 1932, in Pensacola, FL. He was placed in the Memphis Children's Home until the age of 3 ½ when he was adopted by George and Callie Wachter. He attended Shaw Schools, was a member of Shaw Baptist Church, and lived on the same corner of Dean and Jackson Street for 83 years of his life. Billy began working for Truck Line Gas Company in 1951, and on January 9, 1953, he joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country during the Korean War until November 6, 1954. After his service, he returned to his work as a Pipe layer with Trunkline Gas Company until his retirement in June 1988. He grew up loving the woods, nature and the simple things in life. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and an outdoorsman. Billy was a mentor to any young men, passing along his love for the outdoors. His quiet time was spent playing music, which was one of his many passions. He is preceded in death by his parents, George Wachter and Callie Doyle Wachter. Billy is survived by a special friend, Tawandah Sanders; four children, Billy Wachter, Jr. (Cindy) of Oxford, MS, Debbie Barnard (Gary) of Monticello, AR, Donna Williamson (Neal) of Magee, MS, and Jimmy Wachter (Bernadette) of Miami, FL; eight grandchildren; and 16 great grand-children. Pallbearers will be Bill Rose, Chuck Hudson, Skeeter Bowen, Mike Lofton, Fred Roark, and John Hinkle. Honorary pallbearers will be Asa Atkinson, Jo Glen Peeler, Marion Palmer, Bobby Toler, Murry Riddel, and Sonny Roncali. In loving memory of Billy, the family requests donations made to Tennessee Children's Home.
