Charles C. Jacobs, Jr.
Charles Clark Jacobs Jr. 90, died on April 8, 2011 in Cleveland Mississippi. He was the son of Charles C. Jacobs and Vera Joest Jacobs. A celebration of life service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Cleveland, MS with Rev. Bailey Norman officiating. Burial will follow at Clark Jacob Cemetery in Beulah. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland.
Jacobs was born in Greenville Mississippi on January 13, 1921. He resided in Bolivar County, and graduated from Rosedale High School in 1938. He attended Sunflower Junior College for a period of two years, and then went to the University of Mississippi where he received a BA degree in 1942 and a law degree in 1947.
Mr. Jacobs served as a Captain in the Marine Corps during World War II, and participated in campaigns in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tenin, and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the bronze star for action at Saipan and a second bronze star for action at Iwo Jima.
He began the practice of law in Cleveland, Mississippi in 1947. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Mississippi, the U. S. District Courts, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He served as President of the United Givers Fund in 1970, the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce in 1972, and the Cleveland Rotary Club in 1976. He served as commander of the VFW Post at Cleveland, Mississippi, and as chairman of the Bolivar County Development Commission.
Jacobs was elected to the Mississippi Legislature from1952 through 1964, and while there, he served as chairman for the Insurance Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. He was a member of the State Budget Commission from 1960 to 1964.
Beginning in 1976, Mr. Jacobs served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Institutions of Higher Learning until 1988, and he was president of the board in 1985. After his retirement, he served as a member of the Foundation Board for Mississippi Delta Community College.
Mr. Jacobs was married to the former Rosemary Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Fred Clark Jacobs, two sisters, Lillian Jacobs Williams and Vera Jacobs Speakes, and his son Charles Clark Jacobs III. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Adelia Jacobs Stringer (Madel), his wife, Rosemary, his children, Frank Dalton Alley and his wife Ivy, Patricia Alley Denton and her husband Jack, Diane Wilson Jacobs, Catherine Helen Jacobs, Rosemary Jacobs Crocker and her husband Chip, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvary Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Mississippi Delta Community College, or a charity of your choice.
