Mr. Charles Shivers Metcalf, 61, of Boyle, MS, passed away, Wednesday, October 4, 2011 at his home. Visitation will be Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Celebration of life service will be Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Barry Dickerson officiating.
Mr. Metcalf was born in Memphis, TN to William Metcalf and Bonita Shivers Metcalf on August 10, 1950. He was a gourmet cook and could out cook anyone. He loved to fly. It was his passion.
Charles Metcalf was a native of the Mississippi Delta. He lived, flew, and taught in Cleveland, MS, where he was a faculty member at Delta State University. He taught all of the ground school courses in the Department of Commercial Aviation, and performed occasional stage checks. He was formerly the Chief Flight Instructor at Delta State University. He was an advisor for the AHP, the Aviation Fraternity.
Mr. Metcalf began his aviation career as an aerial applicator-fertilizing, seeding, and spraying crops. When an ice storm hit the Delta one year, he took a break from "ag flying" and signed on for charter and sightseeing flights in the Caribbean, all the while working as a flight instructor in the Dominican Republic. He moved to Louisiana to work again as an aerial applicator, but started jumping from planes as well as flying them. After several years of owning and operating a commercial skydiving business, Mr. Metcalf returned to Mississippi and to school- to finish his degree in Commercial Aviation.
He held a BS and MS in Commercial Aviation, and was pursuing a Doctorate in Education. He had Commercial, Instrument, CFI, CFII, and MEI ratings, and was a FAA Designated Examiner for the Part 141 School's Private License and Instrument Rating. He was a member of EOC, Civil Air Patrol.
He logged over 11,500 hours of single- and multi-engine flights. Besides flying, his hobbies were skydiving, hunting, fishing, camping and cooking. Mr. Metcalf was concerned about water quality and water usage (waste) as well as migratory flyways in the Delta- specifically their habitat and maintenance. He flew a 1982 Cessna Skyhawk owned by his student, Dr. Susan Hines. Dr. Hines found conservation a worthy cause, and was happy to facilitate Southwings' flights in and around the state. Mr. Metcalf was a pilot for Southwing and was the mosquito pilot for Cleveland.
Mr. Metcalf is survived by his mother, Bonita Shivers Metcalf of Cleveland, MS; brother, Robert "Bob" Metcalf of Hollister, MO; niece and nephew, Maria Giovanni Metcalf and Justin Edward Metcalf of El Paso, TX; and special friend Marla Pearce of Cleveland, MS.
