Dr. Charlotte Siegel Kaplan, 91, of Cleveland, MS passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012 at her home. Visitation will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at her home, 303 Fayette Davis Ave. Services will be 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Adath Israel Congregation Temple in Cleveland with Rabbi Harry Danziger officiating. Interment will follow in Greenville Jewish Cemetery with her nephews serving as pallbearers.
Dr. Kaplan was born in Sunflower, MS on August 20, 1920, to Samuel Siegel and Sadie Curland Siegel. She married Louis Kaplan in Cleveland, MS on September 13, 1942.
Dr. Kaplan was a Life Member of Hadassah, a Religious School Teacher for 40+ years, president and treasurer of Adath Israel Sisterhood, president of Cleveland Women's Club, and a member of the Cleveland's Garden Club. She worked as a literacy tutor, was active in the Gray Ladies Program at Bolivar Medical Center, volunteered at the hospital from its inception until her passing, volunteered for HOST (help one succeed today) Program, was a member of FEMA emergency shelter and food program and was a member of the Friends of the Library Club. Throughout her life Dr. Charlotte obtained her A.A., B.A., B.S., M.S., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees and taught for 20 years at the collegiate level.
Dr. Kaplan is preceded in death by her father, Samuel Siegel; mother, Sadie Siegel Wade; step-father, Sam Wade; and her husband, Louis Kaplan.
She is survived by her son, Steven Wayne Kaplan of Coldwater, MS; daughter, Nancy Kaplan Chiz of Shaw, MS; Granddaughters, Clare Kaplan of Nashville, TN, Cori Kaplan of Memphis, TN, Melissa Chiz of Athens, GA; grandson, Max Hayden Chiz of New Orleans, LA; great-granddaughter, Riley Bancroft; and great-grandson, Tristram Carey.
In Lieu of flowers, monetary donations are preferred to American Diabetes Association, The American Cancer Fund and The American Heart Association.
