Cherry Walker Wheeler, 93, passed away peacefully at Indywood Estates in Cleveland, Mississippi on Monday, May 8, 2023. Visitation is scheduled for 12:00 noon Thursday, May 11, at First United Methodist Church of Cleveland followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Chris Young. Interment immediately after the service at New Cleveland Cemetery.
Cherry was born in Columbus, Mississippi on November 29, 1929 to Asbury Mose Walker and Mary Elizabeth Egger. Cherry graduated with First Honors from Delta State University in 1951. She married Edward Nott Wheeler, Sr. on February 23, 1952. The life and family they created together is a testament to their love and devotion for each other. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland. Cherry was an elegant and graceful lady who never met a stranger.
Cherry filled her life with joy, service, and celebration. She was the 1977 Junior Auxiliary of Cleveland’s Charity Ball Queen. Her civic affiliations are too numerous to account for here, but highlights include President of the Delta Home and Garden Club, National Corresponding Secretary for the Junior Auxiliary, President of the United Methodist Women, Library Board of Trustees, President of the Friends of the Library, Bolivar County Jury Commissioner, Crosstie Board of Directors, and so many others. Her hobbies included cooking, needlepoint, playing bridge, and spending time with her beloved friends. In the role that brought her the most joy, she was known as Mom to her children and Gran to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and so many others who she adored and loved. She leaves a legacy of love, care, and compassion for generations to come.
She is survived by her two beloved children; a daughter, Beth Wheeler Dean and a son, Nott Wheeler, Jr. and wife Martha; one loving sister Betsy Sledge (John); five granddaughters who she adored and never stopped talking about, Cherry Grace Smith (Todd), Elizabeth Brewster Cummings (Clay), Marcia Wheeler Houser (Jamie), Rachel Wheeler Gilbert (Chase), and Morgan Wheeler McCain (Blake); nine great grandchildren, Lily and Daniel Sims, Wheeler and Everett Brewster, Ryder and Anelise Houser, Camden and Hadley Gilbert, and Ben McCain; a loving and devoted caregiver, Bessie Arrington; and numerous special nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Nott Wheeler, Sr.; and her parents, Mose and Elizabeth Walker.
Pallbearers will be Wheeler Brewster, Clay Cummings, Stan Gaines, Chase Gilbert, Jamie Houser, Ryder Houser, Blake McCain, Bond Murphy, Daniel Sims, and Todd Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Everett Brewster, Ben Bailey, Mark Barger, Mike Brister, Joseph Crews, Pemble Davis, John Henry, Park Hiter, Harry Howarth, Marvin Lott, Rex Lyon, Eckward McKnight, Ricky Poe, Louis Radicioni, Mike Sanders, Homer Sledge, Frank Tindall, and David Walt.
Memorials can be made to the Robinson Carpenter Memorial Library or the First United Methodist Church.
