At age 90, Ira Clay Rayner Jr., died Friday, May 18th in Cleveland, Miss. Clay will be lovingly remembered by his children, Pat Rayner Alford, Sue Allen Pambianchi (Louis), and Ralph Rayner (Sheila), along with his grandchildren Ginger Alford, Stacy Rayner , Emma Alford, Gino Pambianchii, and great grandson Wes Rayner. Visitation will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, on Tuesday, May 22, 2017 at 10 a.m. in the Rayner House, service to follow at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Dr. Julia Moore officiating. Graveside services will be held at New Cleveland Cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his wife Virginia Ward Rayner, daughters Ginger Ann Rayner and Clay Rayner Brock (Eddie).
He was born in Port Gibson, MS, the son of Ira Clay Rayner Sr. and Thelma Morehead Rayner, on the heels of the Great Flood. Clay moved to Merigold, MS soon after his birth.
As a young boy, Clay was a Boy Scout. He earned Eagle Scout status and later went on to serve on the Board of Review and as a God and Country Advisor. He attended Delta State University, University of Mississippi, and Mississippi State University. He served in the World War II in the Army of Occupation. He was a farmer for 23 years, and later went on to be the regional circulation manager for The Clarion Ledger. He and his wife Virginia, were married on October 22nd, 1953 at Calvary Episcopal Church. They enjoyed a wonderful 48 years of marriage, raising five children and four grandchildren. In 2008, he was crowned the Junior Auxillary's Charity Ball King. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for many years, and was passionate about any job that needed to be done. He was an avid lover of Delta State sports, you could find him courtside or in the stands at most any game. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Episcopal Church, his dedication to that church was his greatest passion. To many, he was lovingly known as, "Gamp.."
Pallbearers will be Jim Meyer, Ed Meyer, Bill Powell, Herbie Swain, Lee Speakes, Garry Lucas, Todd Jeffries, and Ken McGarrh Honorary pallbearers are Kirkham Povall , Mark Koonce, and Rick Togerson.
Donations in honor of Clay may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church.
