Daniel T. McQuagge
Daniel Temple McQuagge, 68, of Cleveland died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Bolivar Medical Center. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 29, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Prior to the memorial service, visitation will be at 12:30, also at St. Luke.
Dr. McQuagge was born on March 25, 1942, to Dr. Carlton Lamar McQuagge and Atwell Temple McQuagge. He grew up in Hattiesburg and graduated from Hattiesburg High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in English in 1964 and a master of arts, also in English, in 1968 from The University of Southern Mississippi, and he later earned a Ph.D. in English in 1974 from Florida State University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at The University of Southern Mississippi. He was a professor of English at Delta State University in 1967 and worked there until his retirement in 1999. He also taught English at various high schools in the Delta. He was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English, Conference on English Education, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication. As a member of the National Writing Project, he was instrumental in implementing the Delta Area Writing Project and served as its director for many years. He worked with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teachers Education (NCATE) to accredit the language arts and English programs of public school districts and universities throughout Mississippi and the Southeast.
Dr. McQuagge was active in the Bolivar County Democratic Party and served as an officer of its executive committee. He was also an accomplished cellist and played in various symphonies. He was also a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a member of the choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Carlton McQuagge and Atwell McQuagge, and his wife, Gloria Salter McQuagge.
He is survived by his children, Leslie McQuagge of Cleveland and Carl McQuagge of Hattiesburg; his brother, John (Mary Linda) McQuagge of Wiggins; two granddaughters, Kaleigh and Abigail McQuagge of Flowood; his sister-in-law, Erin Weldon of Petal; his brother-in-law, James Salter of Gautier, and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Gloria Salter McQuagge Scholarship, Delta State Foundation, Box 3141, Cleveland, MS 38733.
