Dennis Rule Burke, Jr., 67, of Ruleville, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013, at the Burke home in Ruleville. A second visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Ruleville Baptist Church. Celebration of Life Services will immediately follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Ruleville Baptist Church. Interment will be in Lehrton Cemetery.
Mr. Burke was born April 29, 1945 in Greenwood to Dennis Rule Burke and Dudley Sharkey Burke. He was a lifetime resident of Ruleville, and a member of Ruleville Baptist Church. He graduated from Ruleville High School, and Auburn University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha order. He served in the Mississippi National Guard, achieving a rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
He returned to Ruleville to the family business, Ruleville Lumber Company. He was then employed by the Mississippi Department of Corrections as Supervisor of Construction. In 1997 he was given the "State Employee of the Year" award by Governor Kirk Fordice.
He participated in many community activities, serving as President of both the Rotary Club and the Ruleville Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janie Nichols Burke of Ruleville; a son, Dennis Rule Burke III of Hernando, and wife, Emily: a daughter, Dudley Burke Couey of Greenville, and her husband, John; two brothers, Dr. Pat Sharkey Burke of Clarksdale, and his wife, Meg, and Dudley Campbell Burke of Ruleville; sisters-in-law, Martha Nichols Oseman of Memphis, and Lottie Mae Nichols Dawkins of Greenville, and her husband, Jim; brother-in-law, Carl Grady Nichols, Jr. of Memphis, and his wife, Liese; father-in-law, Dr. Carl Grady Nichols of Leland; and three special grandchildren; Garren Holt Couey, and Kirkland Myers Couey of Greenville, and Jackson Rule Burke of Hernando.
Reverend Higdon Herrington will officiate at the services.
Pallbearers will be Don Blackwood, Ted Borodofsky, Woods Eastland, Jim Ely, Eddie Givens, Lawson Holladay, Bobby Maxwell, and John Stephens.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or to Ruleville Baptist Church.
