Doris Lucille Burnside McMillian, 88, of Cleveland, died Thursday, January 22, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Desoto Hospital. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at Ray Funeral Home with Greg Chamblee officiating. Burial will follow in the New Cleveland Cemetery.
Mrs. McMillian was born in Cleveland on August 20, 1926, to the Late Henry Hinam and Annie "Nannie" Guice Burnside. She attended Cleveland High School, graduating in 1943. She worked in the office of Cleveland Laundry and for Biddy DeLap, cotton buyer, until her marriage to Samuel Paul McMillian on October 25, 1945. She lived in Seattle, Washington until her husband was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and then lived in Birmingham, Alabama until Mr. McMillian was recalled into the Navy during the Korean War. They lived in Charleston, South Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia until returning to Cleveland in 1952. Mrs. McMillian worked at Baxter until 1962 when she moved to Houston, Texas. She was a talented seamstress and made model garments for a large fabric company at the Galeria in Houston for many years. She served as Municipal Court Clerk for the City of Tomball, Texas for 4 ½ years and served two years on the Board of Directors for Municipal Judges and Court Clerks for the State of Texas. She worked three years for Matcon, INC. as an accountant, retiring in 1981 due to her husband's disability. She returned to Cleveland in 1985. Mrs. McMillian was a member of Yale Street Baptist Church and a life member of Spencer H. Dawson unit of Disabled Americans Veterans Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary for a number of years.
For many years, Mrs. McMillian was a member of the Holiday Ramblers Travel Club, Family Campers and RVers, Coleman Camping Club, Avion Camping Club, and several others. She and Mr. McMillian traveled extensively before he became too disabled to travel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hiram and Annie Burnside; her husband of 55 ½ years, Samuel Paul McMillian; her only son, Paul Kenton "Ken" McMillian; two brothers, Dick and James Burnside; and one sister, Clara Crocker.
She is survived by her daughter Melissa McMillian-Cunningham and husband Kelly Cunningham of Nacogdoches, Texas; granddaughters Amanda Bond and husband Brian Bond of Temple, Texas, and Kimberly McMillian of Albany, Georgia; great-grandsons Dylan Coffin, Carson Bond and Brycen Bond all of Temple, Texas; and nieces Betty Ann Smith of Corinth, Mississippi and Carolyn McGraw and husband Wayne McGraw of Tutwiler, Mississippi.
Pallbearers will be Gene McMillian, Les Poyner, Allen McMillian, Wayne McGraw, Colby Poyner, and W. R. "Jr." Miller. Honorary pallbearer be John Henry Giompoletti.
In memory of Mrs. McMillian, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the church or charity of your choice.
