Mrs. Dorothy Cain Franklin, 92, of Cleveland, MS, passed away Friday, October 19, 2012, at her home in Cleveland.
Visitation will be 10:00 am to 11:00 am, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, MS. Services will immediately follow, beginning at 11:00 am, with the Rev. Michael Mc Laughlin and the Rev. Sid Harmon officiating. Interment will be at 4:30 pm on October 30 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Brookhaven, MS.

Mrs. Franklin was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi on August 24, 1920, to S. Benton Cain and Eddie Estelle Thompson Cain. On May 9, 1942, she married Ralph W. Franklin, whose was Band Director at Copiah-Lincoln College and later at Delta State University, in Brookhaven, MS.
Mrs. Franklin worked for 50 years as a teacher in music education at the college and grammar school level. In 1949 she founded the Collettes, a dancing team for Copiah-Lincoln, which pioneered in half-time show band performances throughout Mississippi and the United States. In 1975 she founded a similar dancing group, the Delta Belles, which also performed throughout the nation with the Delta State Marching Band.
In 1975, Mrs. Franklin was inducted into the Delta State University Hall of Fame, and in 2009 she was presented with the Delta State University Legacy Award. She was a recipient of the Copiah-Lincoln College Alumni Award in 2006.
She is preceded in death by her parents, S. Benton Cain and Eddie Estelle Thompson Cain, and her husband, Ralph W. Franklin.
Mrs. Franklin is survived by her sons, Bishop R. William Franklin (
Carmela) of Buffalo, New York, James Benton Franklin (Cindy) of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, and Robert F. Franklin (Dora) of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren, Travis Franklin, Corinna Franklin, Shelly Franklin, and Beatrice Franklin; sister, Janice Boyd of Dothan, Alabama; and brother, Benton Edmund Cain of Jackson, Mississippi.
In memory of Mrs. Franklin, memorials can be made to the Dorothy C. Franklin Memorial Music Scholarship at Delta State University Foundation Box 3141 Cleveland, MS 38733.
