Dorothy Ruth Hughes Broadwater

Dorothy Ruth Hughes Broadwater, 82, of Cleveland, passed away after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Providence Assisted Living. Visitation will be 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Yale Street Baptist Church. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow at the church beginning at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, with Rev. Robert Haney officiating. Interment will be in North Cleveland Cemetery. Ruth was born February 20, 1934 in Crystal Springs, MS to the late Robert Burdette Hughes and Janet Castilaw Hughes. She graduated from Terry High School in 1952, where she served as the secretary of the class. She attended secretarial school, and later married James Ray Broadwater in 1953 at New Haven Baptist Church, Terry, MS.
Mrs. Broadwater worked in Nutrition and Food Services with the Cleveland Public Schools, Delta State Child Development Center, and was an avid homemaker. One of her favorite things to do was bake and decorate cakes.
Her friends still use some of her favorite recipes.
Until her illness became debilitating, Ruth was an active member of Yale Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, Discipleship Training, worked with the Women's Missionary Union, and participated in every area of Vacation Bible School. Beside her interest in baking, Ruth also enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, and crocheting. Some of her crocheted baby caps have been worn by many newborns at Bolivar Medical Center.
Ruth was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Laverne and one son, Kelly Ray.
She is survived by her husband, James Ray Broadwater of Cleveland; children James Stacey Broadwater (Lelane) of Byram, MS, Timothy Scott Broadwater of Grenada, and Kimberly Jaye Broadwater of Cleveland. She also leaves behind one sister Mildred Hughes Broadwater of Bovina, one brother Jimmy "Buddie" Hughes of Terry, three grandchildren Joshua Broadwater of Byram and Amanda and Ian Broadwater of Grenada; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Broadwater, Wayne Lewis, Emmitt Meyers, Kenneth Meyers, Jimmy Kitrell, and David Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be W. D. Beach, Charles Weeks, Bobby McCarty, Ricky Berryhill and Dr. David Walt.
