Captain Douglas M. Tipton, a retired US Air Force pilot and legal scholar, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2024. He was born on March 11, 1945, to the late Dr. William Tipton and Candace Mobley Tipton, in Pennsylvania. Though he spent most of his young life growing up in Knoxville, TN and always considered that home.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
Following his passion for service (and maybe a little adrenaline), he bravely served his country as a pilot and command officer in the US Air Force for 26 years, including two tours in Vietnam. His unwavering commitment to duty allowed him to excel in his Air Force career, leaving an indelible mark on the service. Raised in a family that valued education, Douglas Tipton pursued academics throughout his life. He obtained a Masters Degree in Counseling, along with a Doctorate of Law. He used his career and this education to always put others first.
During his time in the Air Force, Douglas flew B-52s and served his country with bravery and honor. His remarkable skills, unique charismatic personality and dedication to his craft earned him the utmost respect from his peers and superiors alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, Douglas Tipton held dear his role as a loving and devoted family man, he loved nothing more than his girls. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Julianne Tipton, who stood by his side for over 43 years. They were blessed with three children: Katherine Tipton, Avery Tipton Gilreath, spouse Scott Gilreath, and Jordan Tipton Bass, spouse Yeager Bass. Douglas adored his grandchildren, John Avery Mayes, Abigail Mayes, Olivia Scott, spouse Nathan Scott, Emma Lopez, spouse Zane Lopez, and great-grandchild, Ivory Scott. He cherished each moment spent with them and enjoyed telling stories of his life full of chaos and adventure.
Douglas is predeceased by his brother, Marshall Tipton and their parents, Dr. William Tipton and Candace Mobley Tipton. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. Walter Tipton and Roger Tipton, spouse Kathy Tipton, who shared a lifelong bond filled with love and support.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the life lived by Douglas M. Tipton. His dedication, courage, and unwavering commitment to his country and family will forever be remembered. His passion for knowledge, family, friends and connection will continue to inspire and shape future generations. Douglas will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all those whose lives he touched.
