Later, he worked many years at Parchman, as well as the Bolivar County Department of Health. For the last 20 years, Edgar worked for FEMA, where he expertly navigated the complexities of disaster management. He developed many lifelong friendships throughout his career.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved the adventures of hunting and trapping. He loved working with his hands and building things.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Edgar Erle Smith Jr. and Francis Virginia Smith, as well as his brother, Jasper Franklin Smith, a sister, Francis Smith Burnham , and his faithful canine companion and travel partner, Bear.
Edgar is survived by his special friend, Julia Hall, who brought joy and companionship into his life. He leaves behind children, Edgar E. Smith IV, Kathryn B. Smith, Parker Drake "Duk" Lofton (Carley), favorite Goddaughter Emily Howard, and a host of nieces and nephews who will remember him for his wisdom, warmth, and guidance.
