A Graveside service honoring Mrs. Eleanor Garrett will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, the 7th of July 2023 at New Cleveland Cemetery.
Eleanor Coleman Garrett, a beloved High School teacher and librarian, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at the age of 107. She was born on December 8, 1915, in Cleveland, MS. Eleanor's parents were proud to welcome her into the world as the daughter of James Archie Colman and Bird Houston Coleman.
Eleanor grew up in Cleveland and attended Cleveland High School. Even at a young age, she displayed a passion for knowledge and education that would shape her future career. After graduating from high school, Eleanor pursued higher education at Delta State University where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
In 1940, Eleanor embarked on a new chapter in her life when she married E. Doyle Garrett. Together they built a beautiful life filled with love and shared ambitions. E. Doyle Garrett supported his wife throughout their marriage and took pride in all her accomplishments.
Her dedication to education led her to become a remarkable teacher who touched the lives of countless students throughout her career. Eleanor dedicated herself to teaching at the local high school for many years and had an extraordinary ability to engage her students in learning.
Not only did Eleanor excel as a teacher, but she also served as a librarian. She recognized the transformative power of books and sought to foster a love of reading among students. Eleanor was passionate about creating an inclusive environment where students from all backgrounds could discover new worlds through literature. She was also a life long time member of the United Methodist Church of Cleveland.
Outside of her professional life, Eleanor was known for her warm and compassionate nature. Family meant everything to her, and she cherished the time spent with loved ones. She is survived by her nephews, David Coleman of Cleveland, MS, and Thomas (Pace Barnes) Harris of Miami Beach, FL,
She is predeceased by her loving Husband Doyle Garrett; sisters, Ruth C Andrews of Cleveland, MS and Mrs. Polly C Harris of Cleveland, MS; brothers Dr. James Archie Coleman Jr of Waco, TX, and Elvin Coleman of Cleveland. MS.
Eleanor Coleman Garrett leaves behind a legacy of excellence, kindness, and a lifelong love of learning. She will be remembered as a dedicated educator who instilled the values of education and curiosity in her students. Her impact on the community will endure for generations to come.
