Elizabeth Rose Thompson, 96, of Cleveland, Mississippi, beloved aunt and dedicated teacher was called to be at home with the Lord on January 27, 2023. A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2023 from 1-2 pm at Ray Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 pm the Drew City Cemetery.
Elizabeth was born in Drew, Mississippi to Marcus Edwin and Pearle Adams Thompson on October 23, 1926, and graduated from Drew High School in 1944. She attended Mississippi State College for Women where she was a member of the Baptist Student Union and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Her education continued at Memphis State University where she earned a Master of Arts in 1962. Early in her career, Elizabeth taught in Mississippi. She was a teacher of children of American service personnel in Germany in the 1950s. She returned to the Unites States where she taught in Michigan and Ohio for eleven years. Elizabeth eventually settled in Memphis, Tennessee where she taught first and third grades for a total of twenty-nine years at Snowden Elementary and Macon Road Elementary. As a long-time member of McLean Baptist Church in Memphis, she faithfully served in children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. In 2016, she moved to Cleveland to be with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Marcus A. Thompson (Delma), Emma P. Thompson McCain (Garland) and Frances Thompson.
Elizabeth is survived by her eight nieces and nephews, Kay Vest (John) of Siloam Springs, AR, Mike Thompson (Gerri) of Merigold, MS, Bill Thompson (Cissy) of Merigold, MS, Richard Thompson (Teresa) of Cleveland, Janie Sperbeck of Gulfport, MS, Paula Lofton (Mike) of Boyle, MS, Robin McCain of San Francisco, CA, Cynthia McCain Phillips (Giles) of Columbia, SC and a host of loving great and great-great nieces and nephews.
