Erin Faye Salter Weldon, 78, died on Friday, April 19, 2025, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Erin was born on February 13, 1947, in Mobile, Alabama, to Ila Mae Brooks Salter and James Melvin Salter, Sr. A proud graduate of Murphy High School and The University of Southern Mississippi, she was a middle school teacher, spending most of her career at Eastwood Junior High School in Cleveland, Mississippi.
Erin was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother. When her sister Gloria needed a kidney transplant, Erin happily obliged by donating one of hers and faithfully cared for her sister until she died in 2004. Despite her frequent claims that none of her recipes or meals were as good as Gloria’s, her daughters would like it announced publicly that she was, in fact, a better cook than her sister; her shrimp creole and legendary fudge will be particularly missed. Erin loved The Weather Channel and all things weather-related so much that she likely missed her calling as a meteorologist. She took great pride in her yard and her grandchildren.
Erin was preceded in death by her mother, Ila Mae Salter; father, James Salter, Sr.; and sister, Gloria McQuagge. She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Scotty) Scott of Petal and Elizabeth (Shaun) Holloway of Hattiesburg; her brother, James (Tricia) Salter; her grandchildren, Ethan Scott, Emma Jane Scott, and Hannah Holloway; several nieces and nephews; and a community of kind friends and neighbors Woodshire.
Erin will be laid to rest with her mother and sister at a graveside service in the New Cleveland Cemetery on Monday, April 28, at 10 a.m. in Cleveland, Mississippi. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Erin’s honor to the Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE), 775 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39202.
