Ethelyne Phillips Wooten, 97, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013, in Mt. Juliet, TN. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday, March, 14, 2013, at Ruleville Baptist Church. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow beginning at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Ruleville Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Mann officiating. Interment will follow in Lehrton Cemetery.
She was born January 20, 1916, in Collins, MS. She lived in New Orleans, LA, Gulfport, MS, and Lyman, MS where she graduated high school in 1934. She attended college at MSCW her freshman year but completed her undergraduate degree in Home Economics and Science at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1938.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree, she accepted a teaching position in Ruleville, MS where she met her husband to be, Mr. James A. Wooten. They were married July 10, 1941, and shared their lives together for 48 years, building a home, raising a family, attending church and developing friendships.
Ethelyne taught in the Sunflower County School System at Ruleville High School, Linn High School and Mississippi Delta Junior College. Earning a Master's Degree from Delta State University in Guidance in 1971, she completed her career in education as Guidance Counselor and Home Economics teacher in Ruleville, retiring after 33 years in 1985.
Her life was centered around her family, friends and church. She taught Sunday School for over 20 years and sang in the Ruleville Baptist Church Choir. She held a steadfast faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ whom she knew from an early age and relied on throughout her life and now in death.
Ethelyne was the daughter of D.O. and Josephine Phillips. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James A, Wooten of Ruleville, MS; and two brothers Erclin Phillips of Gulfport, MS, and Rex Phillips of Richton, MS.
She is survived by her two sons, Pressley E. Wooten of Mayland, TN and James A. Wooten Jr. of Mt. Juliet, TN; one grandson, Rodger A. Wooten of Crossville, TN; and one great grandson, Spencer C. Wooten of Crossville, TN.
