Harold Loyd Chambers, Sr. , 84, of Benoit, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. Visitation will be 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Benoit Union Church. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Benoit Union Church with Bro. Floyd Cooper and Bro. Luther Robertson officiating. Interment will be in Drew City Cemetery. Mr. Chambers was born in Bolivar County, MS on December 7, 1930, to James Ellioutt Chambers and Mable Sims Chambers. A proud American, Mr. Chambers served his country in the United States Army. On December 25, 1960, he married Betty Jean Smith at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church outside of Ruleville. He worked for 17 years in textiles at Greenville Mills, and he was also the manager of Benoit Gin Company. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Chambers loved to hunt and fish. He was known for using his skills by working with the Boys Club in Greenville as well as the Boy Scouts for many years. He was talented with his hands and could build, fix or repair anything; and his carpentry skills were shown through his woodwork and metalwork. More than anything, Mr. Chambers' main goal in life was to take care of his family who he dearly loved. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Ellioutt Chambers and Mable Sims Chambers; sister, Frances Pauline Bibb; and brother Ellioutt Allen Chambers. Mr. Chambers is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Chambers of Benoit; sons, Billy Reece McDowell (Leigh) of Benoit and Harold Loyd Chambers, Jr. (Lisa) of Greenville; daughter, Melanie Tackett (Tim) of Oxford; grandchildren, Richard Loyd McDowell of Cleveland; Sarah Beth Reynolds (Parker) of Indianola, Lauren Elizabeth Chambers of Jackson, Dr. Timothy Paul Tackett, Jr. (Jessica) of Birmingham, AL; Daniel William Douglas Tackett of Birmingham, AL; and Benjamin Christopher Tackett of Cleveland; great-grandson, Chambers Montgomery Tackett of Birmingham, AL; sister, Phyllis Williams Robinson (Tommy) of Laurel; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Dr. Timothy Paul Tackett, Jr., Daniel William Douglas Tackett, Benjamin Christopher Tackett, Richard Loyd McDowell, Parker Reynolds, Christopher Scott Robertson, James Edward Robertson, and James Allen Chambers. Honorary pallbearers will be James Robertson, Sr., Joe Smith, Aubry Smith, James Smith, Donnie Dickerson, Earl Coleman, and Donny King. In memory of Mr. Chambers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Benoit Union Church, or the charity of your choice.
