Mrs. Helen Jennings Powell, 83, of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014, under her family's care in Shaw. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Hall and Rev. Lonnie Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Delta Heights Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Powell was born in Atlanta, GA on November 6, 1930, to James Howard Jennings, Sr. and Mabel Brown Jennings. She married Lonnie Eugene Powell in Bessemer, AL on October 28, 1946. Mrs. Powell worked for 16 years with West Gibson and also worked for a few years at Baxter Laboratory, but her true passion was being a housewife and caring for her family and cooking. She was a member of Pace Pentecostal Church and enjoyed attending often.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James Howard Jennings, Sr. and Mabel Brown Jennings; and spouse, Lonnie Eugene Powell.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her sons, James Eugene Powell of Cleveland and Johnnie Powell of Smackover, AR; daughter, Janis Mayo (Jerry) of Shaw; grandchildren, Renee Tomek (Matthew) of Memphis, TN, Crystal Thornton (Marc) of Cleveland, Beth Young of Shaw, and Michael Powell (Lydia) of Pace; great-grandchildren, J.D. Powell (Bryce) of Cleveland and Baylee Thornton of Cleveland; great-great-grandson, John Marshall Powell of Cleveland; and brother, James Howard Jennings, Jr. of Chicago, IL.
In Memory of Mrs. Powell, the family requests donations to be made to the Pace Pentecostal Building Fund.
