Herbert Hargett, 85, of Ruleville, died on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland on Tuesday, March 18 and at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at Ruleville Baptist Church in Ruleville, MS. Services will be at Ruleville Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with burial in Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville. Brother Cory Lancaster and Brother Higdon Herrington will officiate.
Mr. Hargett was born in Golden, MS to the late Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Hargett. He graduated from Belmont High School in 1947 where he was an outstanding basketball player. He signed to play at Sunflower Junior College (now MS Delta Community College.) He attended MS State University on a full basketball scholarship where he received his undergraduate and Masters of Education degrees.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to farm in Sunflower, MS. Later he transitioned into the classroom and began coaching basketball at Ruleville High School. In 1965 he married Margaret Henson Roth of Itta Bena. MS. He became superintendent of Sunflower County Schools where he served for 24 years. Mr. Hargett was very active in church and community. He served Ruleville Baptist Church as teacher and deacon. He was on the Advisory Board of Planters Bank in Ruleville, member of MDCC Board of Trustees, and a member of the Board of Trustees for the MS State Board for Community and Junior Colleges. He was also a member of the Ruleville Rotary Club, MSU M Club and PERS Board of MS
Mr. Hargett was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Hargett, his first wife, LaFrances Morgan Hargett, and a son David Bryan Hargett.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret H. Hargett, and five children, Danny Hargett and his wife, Jane Hart, of Minter City, MS, Judy Tranum and her husband Joe of Cleveland, MS, Jan Moody and her husband Terry of Grenada, MS, Mark Hargett and his wife, Marcia, of Cleveland, MS, and Alan Hargett and his wife Leigh, of Indianola, MS; 13 grandchildren with four great-grandchildren, David Hargett and his wife, Jenni, and their daughter, Ali, Ben Hargett and his wife Stribling and their son, Henry, Matt Hargett and his wife Jamie, all of Greenwood, MS, Haley Roth Tranum of Dallas, TX, Margaret Sloan Tranum of Clinton, MS, Joseph Tranum of Cleveland, MS, Meagan Moody of Memphis, TN, Terra M. Cravens and her husband Allen and their children Jack and Witt of Birmingham, AL, Cade Moody of Grenada, MS, Aubrey Hargett of Cleveland, MS, Ally Hargett of Cleveland, MS, Luke Hargett and Maddox Hargett both of Indianola, MS; and two sisters, Jean Malone and Joyce Payne both of Belmont, MS.
Pallbearers are his grandsons, David Hargett, Ben Hargett, Matt Hargett, Joseph Tranum, Cade Moody, Luke Hargett, Maddox Hargett and Allen Cravens.
Memorials may be made to the Ruleville Baptist Church, MDCC Development Foundation. or the charity of your choice.
