Ishmael Gordon Patterson, 92, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011, surrounded by his four daughters. Services will be held Monday, August 15, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland, MS at noon. Reverend Milton Burd and Dr. Ryan Whitley will be officiating. Visitation will be in the church sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in New Cleveland Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home of Cleveland.
Ishmael Gordon Patterson was born July 11, 1919, in Rosebud, Arkansas, to the late William Hugh Patterson and Maude Etta Patterson. He resided in Rosebud until he entered the navy. He was a veteran of World Was II serving on the Ticonderoga and was awarded the Purple Heart. In November of 1945 he married Florence Rose Sampson who was the everlasting love of his life. He and Florence moved to the Delta in 1945 where he farmed for 35 years until his retirement in 1980.
I.G., along with his family, was a member of Merigold Baptist Church and later a member of First Baptist church in Cleveland. He was a devoted family man and a devout Christian serving for many years as a deacon in both churches. Florence and his four daughters were his absolute pride and joy. His daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren have such great love for him and will miss him greatly.
His beloved Florence preceded him in death on February 1, 2010 after 64 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Jewel Boggs of Greenville, Wilma Lee Patterson of Memphis, and Jamay Patterson of Rosebud and by his brothers, Donald Patterson, with whom he farmed, Coy Patterson of Rosedale, and Edwoil Patterson of Florida.
He is survived by his four daughters, Patrician Anderson and her husband, Tom, of Plano, Texas, Carol Harris and her husband, Bill, of Bullard, Texas, Connie Farish and her husband, Tom, of Pensacola, Florida, and Cathey Trussell and her husband, Bill, of Jasper, Alabama. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his four sons-in-law and two grandsons, Tom Anderson, Bill Harris, Tom Farish, Bill Trussell, Michael Anderson, and Jason Trussell.
