James Sledge

Mr. James Winford "Wint" Sledge, 85, of Cleveland, MS passes away at his home Sunday, August 7, 2011. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of life service will be Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Bob Hill officiating. Burial will follow at North Cleveland Cemetery.
Mr. Sledge was born October 24, 1925 in Choctaw County, MS to Corben and Lillie Sledge. He married Mary D. Orman on December 17, 1949 in Greenville, MS. Mr. Sledge joined the Navy during WWII and served on the USS Chaffee until he was honorably discharged. He worked for 35 years as a mechanic at Sledge Chevrolet, was a member of Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years and served as chief of the fire department for two of those years. He loved his church and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 26 years. He had a lot of friends, was a good father, loving husband and caring grandfather.
Mr. Sledge is preceded in death by his parents, Corben and Lillie Sledge; brothers, Stacy Sledge, J.C. Sledge and Larry A. Sledge; and sisters, Marylee Burchfield, Mabel Wise and Mazel Williams.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Sledge of Cleveland; Son, Larry Sledge (Patsy) of Heber Springs, AK; Grandson, Joshua Sledge of Jackson, MS; Brothers, Prentiss Sledge (Sadie) of Lancaster, SC and Hubert Sledge (Ann) of Columbus, MS.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Alford, Robert Earl Steward, Travis Andrews, Otis Hankins, Lance Jackson, Glen Wong, Jr., Joshua Sledge and James Ray Hawkins.
