Jean Millican Millen

Jean Millican Millen, of Drew MS, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, with loved ones at her side. Born January 4, 1945, in Skene, Mississippi, her presence and contributions will be deeply missed within the community she called home.  A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Jean met her husband, Louis B. Millen, Jr., at Delta State University. They were married in 1967 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, where both taught school before relocating to Marin County, California, and later Germany during Louis’s Army service. They enjoyed traveling throughout Europe during their time there. They moved back to Drew in 1972, where they enjoyed many good times with friends and neighbors through the years.

For over two decades, Jean served Ruleville Central High School and the Sunflower County School District, not merely as a teacher, but as a tireless champion of her students. She was an early pioneer of technological networking within the district, recognizing the power of connectivity to enhance learning. Beyond the classroom, she was a skilled grant writer; she used funding and resources to support the educational needs of her community. Jean deeply valued her colleagues and the friendships they cultivated over the years.

Jean's character was defined by her strong, engaging, and charming presence. She was assertive and persistent, qualities that served her well as a dedicated advocate for those she cared for. Her love for nature was profound, and she found solace and joy in observing the wildlife that graced her yard. She loved birds, a passion she shared with her family, and cherished the sight of purple irises and the song of the orchard oriole. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Drew Culture Club.

Jean is survived by her steadfast partner and companion, husband Louis; son, Judd Millen (Oxford, MS); daughters, Marin Millen and her fiancé, Ryan Nordstrom (San Diego, CA), and Blair Millen and her partner, Steve Carter (Colorado Springs, CO); sister, Peggy Sullivan (Portland, OR); and grandchildren, Althea Hay and Layton Hay. She was preceded in death by parents, Andrew and Sarah Millican, and her beloved siblings: Jimmy, Troy, Roy Millican, Lucille (Cille) McCool, and Pat Whitfield. She had a special connection to each one that she cherished. Their memories will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew them.

Jean’s influence endures through her family and the countless students she inspired. A memorial service will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the National Audubon Society.
