Jeanette Selman Kelso, 100, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2017, at New Cleveland Cemetery with Rev. Will Wilkerson officiating.
Mrs. Kelso was born on November 1, 1916, to William Ernest Selman and Belle Ashley Selman in Monticello, MS. She attended Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS where she was a member of the Commerce Club, Bach Society, Special Dancing, Glee Club, Vesper Choir, Wedding Chorus, Masque, Vertically Elite, "Y" Sponsor, The Maskers, Pi Omega Pi and a Dream Girl of Pi Kappa Alpha. In 1938, after graduation from MSCW, she moved to Cleveland, MS, accepting a position teaching business classes for high school students and also serving as school secretary for many years. She retired after 38 years of employment by the Bolivar County School system.
In Cleveland, she met and later married Richard Alonzo Kelso, Sr. on December 14, 1941 at First United Methodist Church where they were active members. Mrs. Kelso also sang in the choir for 40 years. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, music and art.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William Ernest Selman and Belle Ashley Selman; husband Richard Alonzo Kelso, Sr.; her siblings, Vera Mae Selman Buckley, Lola Frances Selman, William Howard Selman, Mary Evelyn Selman Sklar, Charles Ernest Selman, Herbert Winsyl Selman and Eldon Ashley Selman.
Mrs. Kelso is survived by her daughter, Carol Kelso Westbrook (Chip) of Memphis, TN; son, Richard Kelso of Jackson, MS; a host of nieces and nephews; and extended family.
