John Smith

John William Smith, 65, of Drew, passed away Monday, July 28, 2014, at North Sunflower Medical Center. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home with Bro. Larry Chouccoli and Bro. Larry Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in Drew City Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Charleston, MS on July 13, 1949, to William Lloyd and Effie Glass Smith. On August 2, 1969, he married Linda Gail Pernell in Charleston. He proudly served our country, earning a purple heart in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. From 1980-2013, he worked as the manager at the grain elevator for Delta Rice Services. Mr. Smith was a member at Bethel Baptist Church as well as the Christian Motorcycle Association. He loved restoring cars and entering car shows, riding his motorcycle, and volunteering any chance he got, especially with the food pantry. He was a former church deacon as well as a former city alderman for Drew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Effie Smith; and brother, Billy Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda Pernell Smith of Drew; daughters, Becky Smith Aultman (Kevin) of Pace, FL and Leslie Smith Cadzow (Sean) of Benton, AR; grandchildren, Logan Aultman of Shaw Abby Aultman and Emmi Aultman of Pace, FL, and Kira Cadzow and Chloe Cadzow of Benton, AR; siblings, Jimmie Lee Smith (Liz) of Utah, Juanita Allday (Erbie) of Byram, William "Sonny" Smith (Jean) of Loxley, AL, Peggy Kirk of Byram, and Dr. James E. Smith of Enid; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Aultman, Sean Cadzow, Jim Dutton, Butch Cummins, Kenneth Ashmore, and Jimmy Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Stringfellow, Jim Pettigrew, Sr., Perry Morgan, Shelley Smith and Mahlon Pernell.
In memory of Mr. Smith, donations may be made to the Baptist Children's Village.
