John West Lewis, 74, of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, November 9, 2018, at Bolivar Medical Center. While we are sad, my sister and I are relieved his struggle with Parkinson's Disease is done. Visitation will be 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland. A Family Memorial Services will immediately follow beginning at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sid Harmon officiating.
He was born on August 26, 1944, to Virginia West Lewis and Walter Lee Lewis. They predeceased him as did his sons, John West Lewis and Walter Lee Lewis, III. His sister, Mary Agnes and his bother-in-law, Jimmie Hood survive him as do his brother, Walter Lee Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Linda. My sister, Mary Kimbriel Lewis and I, John West Lewis, III are also left to remember him.
Dad was a graduate of Delta State College and served in the Mississippi National Guard, armored division achieving the rank of E6 and loving driving a tank.
My dad had a long career in commercial lending; taking him to many locales, even India which he relished talking about. But he most cherished his hometown, Cleveland. A Sunday ride with him was a trip through an old phonebook. He could tell you who had lived in almost every house we passed and more information than you wanted, and then Parkinson's took his memory.
Dad loved his First Presbyterian Church and volunteering at Helping Hands and Bolivar County Hospital. He had a lifetime interest in photography. He took pictures, framed pictures, and gave pictures away. His main focus was his beloved grandchildren, Anne Hartmann and John West, IV. Now he is gone, leaving a hole for us to fill with the same joy he found in life.
Dad was a good man.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, HWY 8, Cleveland, MS 38732, or to Beacon Harbor, P.O. Box 701, Greenwood, MS 38930.
