John William Mathis
Mr. John William Mathis, 70, of Corinth, MS, passed away on January 8, 2018, in Memphis, TN. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2018, at Ray Funeral Home. Memorial Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2018, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Haney officiating.
John was born on December 1, 1947, to Ollie R. Mathis and Mabel Hicks Mathis in East Prairie, MO. At the age of 5, his birth mother passed away and he was blessed with a new and loving mother, Ruby Jewel Mathis who proudly raised him. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War then worked as a factory worker for Duofast for years until retirement. John enjoyed to hunt and fish since his stroke he loved selling produce. He spent his time after retirement listening to old country music, watching Western films, and tinkering/building things. John cherished the time he was able to spend with children especially his grandchildren. You could often find him sitting outside, enjoying a cup of coffee.
He is preceded in death by his birth parents, Ollie R. Mathis and Mabel Hicks Mathis; mother, Ruby Jewel Mathis; sister, Patsy Winters; and brothers, Glenn Greer, Bobby Mathis, Jr., and Freddie Mathis.
John is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Alton) Gilbert of Cleveland, MS and Kim (Michael) Settlemires of Corinth, MS; step children, Chris Harvey (Jennifer) of Fulton, MS and Tom Harvey of Cleveland, MS; grandchildren, Kalie Krugler, Jon Caleb Krugler, Kelton Willett, Tylar Cooper, Jacob Willett, Dalton Gilbert, Zoey Franklin, and Tara Franklin; siblings, Terry (Linda) Greer of Cleveland, MS, H.S. (Syble) Greer of Cleveland, MS, Jynean (Ed) Medders of Pontotoc, MS, Jynan Bowen of Boyle, MS, Robbie (Gene) Doyle of Skene, MS, J.D. (Rose Ann) Mathis of Brandon, MS, and Kenny (Gail) Mathis of LA; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Greer of Pucket, MS.
Pallbearers will be Travis Greer, Michael Yates, Jimmy Yates, Gaylen Williams, Bubba Murphey, and his good friend, James.
