Mr. Julies Powell, 90, of Cleveland, MS, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011, at his home. Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of life services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011, immediately following the visitation at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. James Wilkerson officiating. Interment will be at Merigold Cemetery.
Mr. Powell was born August 9, 1921, to Benjamin Lafayette Powell and Hester Rebecca Grant Powell. On August 10, 1948, he married Elaine Carroll at Sunflower Plantation. He served our country in WWII and received a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge and fought in five major battles in the European theatre. Mr. Powell was a very modest, humble man who loved his Lord, his family and his Southern gospel music. He loved ALL children and doted on his four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Although he didn't have formal education, he wanted young people to get all the education possible. He was totally and painfully honest, a man of his word, and one who would never betray a confidence.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elaine C. Powell.
Mr. Powell is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Quinn Jabbour of Cleveland, MS; son, Larry Powell of Cleveland, MS; grandchildren, Kristi Powell Seeley (Dean) of Merigold, MS, Brad Powell of Merigold, MS, David Quinn (Anastasiya) and Will Quinn both of Fremont, CA; great-grandchildren, Harrison Seeley, Conner Seeley, Mere Kasen Seeley, Ethan Quinn and John Bryson Powell; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pall bearers will be Brother LaPresto, W.D. Beach, Curtis Manus, Dean Seeley, Ankie Cummins and Brad Powell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jimmie Kittrel, David Quinn and Will Quinn.
