Lois was the daughter of William Hoyt Gandy and Ethel Pilcher Gandy, who farmed on the western edge of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, near the Texas state line. She was one of seven children, and was extremely close to her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. She was much beloved by many nieces and nephews. As one nephew said, "The fun didn't start until Aunt Lois arrived."
Lois moved to Skene, Mississippi, with her first husband, James Woodrow Ferguson, after his discharge from the Army subsequent to World War II. Following Ferguson's death in 1955, Lois attended Delta Beauty College in Greenville, and returned to her farm in Skene where she operated Lois' Beauty Shop through much of her working life. In 1960, she married Milton Griffith, an area farmer and they shared 31 years together before his death in 1992.
She attended the Centerfield Baptist Church during her early Skene years, but for most of her life she was a active in the Skene Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and working in her yard. A wonderful highlight of her later years, was a monthly gathering of friends at the meetings of the Skene 'Sassie Ladies' Red Hats Society.
She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, one sister and two brothers, as well as her eldest son, James Woodrow Ferguson Jr., who died in 1962 while attempting to rescue a young woman he saw jumping from a bridge into the Columbia River near Kennewick, Washington. He was 19.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Debra L. Ferguson (Owen Taylor) of Brandon, Mississippi, and her son, Bill Griffith (Melanie Striebeck) of Skene.
She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild: Rev. Sarah Taylor Condon (Rev. Josh Condon) of Houston, Texas, and their son, Neil; Aaron Owen Taylor of Mobile, Alabama; Jessica Lynn Griffith (Joey Parrott) of Cleveland; Whitney Griffith Jackson (Eric Jackson) of Skene; and William Houston Griffith of Cleveland.
Other survivors include her sister, Olga Jean Blanco (Weldon) of Florien, Louisiana, and her brother Shannon Gandy (Dixie) of Lacombe, Louisiana.
We are very grateful to the wonderful women who have been companions and friends to our Mother at Indywood Estate.
