Mr. Lonnie Sims, 89, of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Bolivar Medical Center. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015, at The First Baptist Church in Cleveland. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. April 4, 2015, at The First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Rev. Brad Beckwith and Rev. James A. Breland officiating. Interment will follow in New Cleveland Cemetery. Mr. Sims was born in O'Reily, MS on March 20, 1926, to Lonnie Jefferson Sims and Carrie Thompson Sims. He graduated from Boyle High School in 1944. He proudly served as a coxswain in United States Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Curtis, a seaplane tender. On November 14, 1947, he married Sue Fowler in Boyle, MS. He worked for 30 years as an operator at Trunkline Gas Company. As an active member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, he volunteered his time for over a decade up until recently. He served in many ways including kitchen staff and broadcasting. Mr. Sims enjoyed gardening, wood working, yard work, and caring for his four cats.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Carrie Sims Purvis; wife, Sue Fowler Sims; brother, Clyde Sims; and granddaughter, Maureen McCranie. Mr. Sims is survived by his daughter, Lonnye Sue Pearson of Portsmouth, VA; son, Dwayne Sims (Brenda) of Enterprise, AL; grandchildren, Melanie Mansfield (Jeff) of Portsmouth, VA, Cliff Sims (Megan) of Birmingham, AL, and Brian Sims of Florence, AL; great-grandchildren, Parker, Peyton, Mabry, and Fin Mansfield all of Portsmouth, VA; sister, Mary Sims Gibson of Hot Springs, AR; and three nieces. Pallbearers will be Cliff Sims, Brian Sims, Parker Mansfield, Peyton Mansfield, Tommy Barrett, Wylie Hilburn, Gayland White and Mike Lynchard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Baptist Children's Village and/or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
