Mary James Blakeman

Mary James Clark Blakeman, 89, a mother, homemaker, and friend to all who knew her, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2012, after a lengthy illness. She was born to Mary Frances and James Coombs Clark on December 29, 1922. She was baptized and grew up in the First Presbyterian Church in Trenton, Tennessee. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1945 with a major in home economics. She married S.R. "Sonny" Blakeman, Jr. on June 10, 1947, who passed away twenty five days short of their fifty-fifth anniversary on May 16, 2002. Her love for her Savior has been shown throughout her life with her obedient service to Him. Mary James was a trusted friend and was always available to help in joy or in sorrow.
Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Ray Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 9:00 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2012, at New Cleveland Cemetery followed by a Memorial Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, Mississippi, with Reverend Timothy Starnes officiating.
Mrs. Blakeman moved to the Delta soon after her marriage and started working in Cleveland, Mississippi, at Delta State University's 3-year-old nursery school. Over the years she has continued to enjoy friendships with the adults these children have become. She continued to witness to children by having them in her home and playing Grandmother Jamie to many. She worked for the Bolivar County Library for nineteen years during which time she earned her Master of Library Science degree from Delta State University.
A charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Mrs. Blakeman was chairman of its flower committee for many years. She trained many younger ladies in the church, delighting in and encouraging their creativity, and preparing them to take over her work.
She was very civic minded and attended almost all city and county events. A life member of the Cleveland Junior Auxillary, Mrs. Blakeman was chosen queen of the Charity Ball in 1981. She was a member of a bridge club, an eight-party travel group, and the Delta Garden Club. She was an inspiration to all because of her energy and zest for life and desire to make each day count. Her love of God's creation and her faithfulness to her friends was a model to many.
She leaves behind one son, Randolph and his wife, Elspeth of San Antonio, TX; one aunt, Virginia Burrow Councill; five first cousins and their families and a host of devoted relatives by marriage and equally devoted friends. She also leaves special friends, Shirley and Mark Windham and their family, Bunny and Peter Beilman (Jack, Emily, and Charlotte); Mary Kelly and Jason Branning (Meg, Charlie and Benjamin); and Erin and Ryan Miller (Shirley Cate and Gracie).
Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 896, Cleveland, MS 38732
