Mildred Newman

Mildred Carter Newman died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 23 at Indywood Estate.
Our mother, Mildred Carter Newman, was born in Kosciusko, MS on February 21, 1917 to Betty Mae Wallace Carter and Robert Emmett Carter. At a very early age she, her parents, and her older brother Harvey moved to Clarksdale, MS, where her father owned a farm. She grew up there and graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1934. She attended Mississippi State College for Women (MUW) in the class of 1938 where she majored in bacteriology, was a member of Masker Social Club, and enjoyed working on the school newspaper, The Meh Lady. There she met our father, James V. Newman from Pace, MS, a Mississippi State student. They were married in 1937 and lived in Pace. During World War II they lived at Keesler Field at Biloxi where Jimmy was a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. After the war, they returned to Pace where Jimmy farmed and Mildred was a homemaker. We all had many happy years in this small Delta town. After the death of our Dad in 1991, Mother moved to Cleveland in 2002 and more recently enjoyed living at Indywood Estates.
Her life-long love for playing bridge was a great source of enjoyment and resulted in many strong friendships. She was an active member of the Mississippi Delta Chapter of DAR for over 60 years. For many years she and our Dad were members of Cleveland Country Club and Benoit Outing Club. She was a member of Pace Methodist Church and, more recently, First Methodist Church in Cleveland.
Mother was devoted to her husband, her three daughters and all her family members, including seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. We all have many happy memories of our mother and grandmother's many delicious meals, especially her black bottom pie, chicken pie, and caramel cake! We will remember her most for being a loving Mother and a loyal friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Dr. Harvey Carter and his wife, Helen. She is survived by her daughters: Betty Barry (George), Jesslyn Lumb Giove (Frank), and Mildred (Cookie) Jones, her grandchildren: Kathy Barry Gresham (Jim), Hank Barry (Rhonda), Jim Barry (Maria), James Lumb (Kellie), Ashley Lumb States (Ron), Chanse Jones, and Jesslyn Jones, her great grandchildren: James Brown (Elizabeth), Barry Brown (Brittany), Kristina Barry, Kimberly Barry, George Barry IV, Foster Deck, Sophie Deck, and Eloise Lumb, her great-great grandson, Christian James Brown, her niece, Audrey Carter Breeding, her nephew, Harvey Wallace Carter, Jr. and her nieces Rachel CumingTate and Mary Camille Cuming Dummer. Services will be held at the Cleveland Methodist Church on Saturday, March 26. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 preceding the service at the church. Burial will follow the service in Delta Heights Cemetery. Her grandsons and great grandsons will be pallbearers. Ray Funeral Home will handle all arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials can be made to the Cleveland Methodist Church, the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
