Morton Eric Muir, O.D., age 93, of Boyle, MS, passed away on March 19, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. A graveside service will be held at New Cleveland Cemetery in Cleveland, MS, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019, officiated by Rev. Tim Starnes.
Eric Muir was born September 19, 1925, in Electric Mills, MS, to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Connor Muir, Sr., their third child and second son. He attended Enterprise High School, University of Alabama, and graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1947. He entered private practice initially in the Jackson area but subsequently served in the Korean War as an optometric officer. He the relocated to Cleveland, MS, in 1953, to join Andy Reese, O.D. and remained in private practice in Cleveland for 62 years until his retirement. Dr. Muir served as the first optometric member on the Mississippi State Board of Health for 12 years. He served as president of the Lions Sight Foundation and was an active member of the Cleveland Lions Club, during which time he worked with visual impairment screening of the local schools.
As a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, he served on the Session and the Diaconate. He is a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Cleveland and has served on its Missions Committee.
Eric Muir married Nan Simmons on March 15, 1956. They resided in Boyle, MS, where they raised their three children. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and gardening.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Sara "Sally" Phyllis Muir; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Connor Muir, Sr.; brother, Chris Connor Muir, Jr., sister, Desima Dean Willeford and her husband, Willie; brother-in-law, Bernell Eustis Simmons D.D.S. and his wife, Bess; and sister-in-law, Sarah Simmons and her husband, Charles.
Eric is survived by wife, Nan Simmons Muir; son, Eric Wyatt Muir, M.D. (Betty); son, Edward Simmons Muir, M.D.; granddaughter, Sara Muir Smigielski, Pharm. D. (Danny); grandson, Christopher Eric Muir (Erica); great-grandson, Christopher Wyatt Muir; sister-in-law, Marge Eichelberger Muir; six nephews; and three nieces.
The family requests memorials be made to the Sara Phyllis Muir Scholarship Fund, Office of Development, Belhaven College, 1500 Peachtree Street, Jackson, MS 39202 or Covenant Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, MS.
