Nell Dean Peay, 96, passed away on July 17, 2014 in Denton, TX. A native Mississippian, she was born in Clarksdale on March 16, 1918. She graduated from Cleveland High School, Cleveland, MS, in 1936 and from Delta State Teachers College in 1939. After teaching eight years in Pelahatchie, Isola, and Jackson, she received her Master's degree with a specialty in Reading at George Peabody College, Nashville, TN, in 1947.
She joined the faculty at Peabody in the spring of 1947, serving as Remedial Reading supervisor of the Reading Clinic and later as Acting Director. In the spring of 1952 she became Supervisor of Remedial reading in the Reading Clinic at the University of Houston. In l954 she was named Director of the Reading Clinic and Assistant Professor of Education at East Central State College, Ada, OK, where she retired in 1978 after 24 years of teaching.
Ms. Peay originated the annual reading conference at East Central, which turned out to be the most successful conference ever held there. At East Central she was elected president of the Oklahoma Education Association and president of the Oklahoma Peabody Alumni group. She also sponsored the Chi Omega sorority and for a while the Pep Club. She was active in the East Central Women's Club, Fortnightly Study Club, Methodist Women of Ada, and Tanti Study Club.
Throughout her high school and college careers and her teaching career as well she was interested in all sports, especially tennis. After retiring from teaching she joined the National Senior Sports Association where she participated in yearly tennis tournaments for eight years and won several awards in singles and doubles. She was an avid Oklahoma Sooner and Dallas Cowboy fan.
In 1968 she married Homer W. Peay of Ada, who preceded her in death in 1977. She moved to Good Samaritan Village, Denton, TX, in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Russell and Lewellen, and her sister, Lillian. She is survived by three nieces and one nephew: Judy Ault of Fallon, NV, Dorothy Wieters of Franklin, TN, Debbie Brown of Elmhurst, IL, and George Dean of Cuyahoga Falls, OH. She is also survived by long-time friends and caregivers Dr. Charles and Mrs. Darlyn Martin of Denton.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014, in the New Cleveland Cemetery with Ray Funeral Home in charge and eulogy by Dr. Charles Martin
