Ms. Nell Elizabeth Wynn, 98, of Merigold, MS, passed away, Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Indywood Estate in Cleveland, MS. Visitation will be Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Merigold Methodist Church in Merigold, MS from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Celebration of life service will begin at 1:00 p.m. immediately following visitation. Burial will follow services in New Cleveland Cemetery.
Ms. Wynn was born December 13, 1913 in Merigold, MS to Dr. Andrew Monroe Wynne and Olyve Obrien Wynne. She graduated Merigold High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1931. She attended Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in 1935 and a Master of Music in 1936. She then came to Delta State Teacher's College to begin a teaching career in music. While at Delta State, she was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, was a charter member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and was a member of Phi Beta Fraternity. During her teaching tenure she continued her education at the University of Michigan, McGill University in Montreal, Canada and Julliard School of Music in New York. She also took private organ lessons in Memphis, Tennessee. Ms. Wynn loved to travel extensively in Europe and she retired from Delta State University in 1978, after 42 years of teaching. After retirement, Nell took care of her mother, who lived to be 99 and her sister, Olyve, who lived to be 96. She was very involved with her family and led an active life at Indywood Estate. Nell was very involved in watching her grand-nephews, Jack and Jon Westerfield, growing up in Merigold, MS. She will be laid to rest with her childhood doll, Plumpy.
She is survived by her sister, Shirley Wynne Westerfield; nephew, Andrew M.W. Westerfield; great-nephews, Jack and Jon Westerfield; great, great-niece, Ella Grace Westerfield; and niece, Kim Westerfield all of Merigold, MS; nephew, John Wynn; nieces, Elizabeth Matthews and Mary Nelson; nieces, MaryMartha Wynne, Patricia Wynne and Julia Barton; grand-nieces and nephews, Holly and Bonnie Nelson, Adam and Lee Matthews, Shelby and Kyla Barton, and Betsy and Walter Haywood.
Ms. Wynn is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Olyve Stuart Wynne and Lorraine Wynne Wester; brothers, Dr. John O. Wynn and Andrew Monroe Wynne, Jr. and niece, Jennifer Gollaway; and beloved nephew, Jim Westerfield.
Pallbearers will be, Jack Westerfield, Jon Westerfield, Park Hiter, Ed Meyer, Pat Wynne and Warren Bell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Albert Junkin, Dr. Jon Meyer and Billy Latham.
Memorials may be made to the Merigold Methodist Church in Merigold, MS.
