Nell was born on September 3, 1924, in Cleveland, where she was a graduate of Cleveland High School. She was a bookkeeper for over 25 years. As a widow, she worked a full-time job and three part-time jobs to support her sons. During that time, she was awarded the title of "Den Mother of the Year" while serving with the Cub Scouts of America.
Nell loved her family, traveling and serving the Cleveland community. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always enjoyed telling or hearing a good joke. Cooking, gardening, sewing, crocheting and quilting were her favorite hobbies. Always civic minded, she devoted time to many worthy organizations. She served with the Business and Professional Women's Club as President, the Cleveland Garden Club, the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce (city beautification and mosquito control) and she participated in numerous other charitable activities. Nell was also once honored as the Grand Marshal of the annual Cleveland Christmas Parade.
Nell's engaging personality ranged from tomboyish to sophisticated - a true "STEEL MAGNOLIA". She lived a remarkable and full life and will always be an inspiration to her many friends and family.
Nell is preceded in death by her husbands, E.G. Warren and George Childress; parents; Leslie G. Simms and Effie Simms Henson; siblings, James Terrell Simms, Billy Troy Simms and Clara Lucille Simms Oakes.
She is survived by her two sons, E.G. Warren, Jr. (Darlene) of Gulfport, MS, and Leslie "Les" Warren of Beaumont, TX; one brother, Lawrence Henson of Cleveland; sister, Janie Hardy (Harold) of Buford, GA; three grandchildren, Melissa Warren of New Orleans, LA, Eric Warren (Mary Elizabeth) of Gulfport, MS, and Miriam Warren of Washington, DC; one great-granddaughter, Anna Grace Warren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Chris Hardy, Bert Oakes, Cetin Oguz, David Mullen, Charles Cutts, Eric Warren, and Harold Hardy.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Indywood Estates for their care and service as well as Nell's niece and care giver, Diane Horton; and her supportive hospice nurse, Marjorie Sappington .
Our deepest appreciation and gratitude goes to Betty Augusta for her years of dedicated friendship and care giving.
