Oscar & Nina Poe

It is with great sadness that we inform everyone of the passing of Mr. Oscar Poe, 86, on January 17, 2024, following several months of illness, and his wife Nina Faye Poe, 80, on January 20, 2024, following many years of Parkinson’s Disease and dementia. A visitation honoring both Oscar and Nina will take place Saturday, January 27, from 1-2 p.m. at Morrison Chapel Baptist Church. A celebration of life honoring Oscar and Nina will follow at 2 p.m. at the same location.
Oscar Poe was born on January 11, 1938, in Cleveland, MS, to Lewis Dixon Poe and Cammie Morgan Poe. He spent his formative years in Cleveland, attending and graduating from Cleveland High School. He attended a semester at Mississippi State University and furthered his education at Delta State University. Oscar was a long-time employee United Insurance Company until his retirement.
Nina was born on July 25, 1943, in Tomnolen, MS, to Alton and Merle Griffin. She spent most of her childhood on the Quiver River and had countless memories of working and playing there with her brothers and sisters. Nina attended Ruleville High School and worked many years at Gaines Oil Company.
Oscar met Janice McKnight on a blind date, and they were married in August 1958 until her death on July 30,1978. Nina met Charles Brewer at the Cleveland Skating Rink, and they were married for 22 years until his death. Oscar and Nina were married June 27, 1986, and enjoyed a happy and loving marriage,.
Oscar and Nina were Christ followers. They both entered into a relationship with the Lord in their late 60s. Believing that Jesus died for their sins and was the only way to the Father, they wanted people to know Christ and to know it is never too late to turn your life over to Him. The Poes were active member of Morrison Chapel Baptist Church for 15 years, and Oscar served as a deacon for many of those years.
Oscar loved gardening, fishing, golfing, and carpentry work. He made several beautiful pieces for his church which they continue to enjoy. He loved cooking for special Sunday dinners at his church, and fried okra was his specialty. No one could cook fried okra like he could! Nina loved gardening, fishing, and golfing with Oscar. Oscar dedicated the last seven years of his life to caring for and serving his wife as her health condition worsened. Oscar’s dedication to her was a reflection of his love and service to the Lord. Oscar and Nina’s care and concern for others is also evident in their request that their bodies be donated to science at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS.
Oscar is preceded in passing by his parents and his sister Betty Gordon. Nina is preceded in passing by her parents and siblings, James Homer Griffin, Huey Griffin, Jack Griffin, Joan Barnett, and Eloise Cobb McCown. Oscar is survived by his sister Diane McAfee, and Nina is survived by siblings, Billy Joe Griffin and Cora Lee Morris. They are both survived by their six children: Tommy Poe, Mylinda (David) Tedford, Terrie (Randall) Hodges, Charles (Terri Lynn) Brewer, Rusty (Lura) Poe, and Terry Brewer. They were also the beloved grandparents of Andy, Matthew (Kimberly), Courtney (Justin), Kristy, Jana (Adam), Caleb (Jackie), Allie (Dalton), Malorie (Colton), Christopher, Stormy, Harrison (Samantha), Darcy (Christian), Taylor Courtney, and Ethan (Arial).
