Otha Johnson Tedford, 89, of Cleveland went to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at his home. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Ray Funeral Home.Celebration of Life services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, November 22, 2013, at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Don Tucker, Rev. Greg Chamblee, and Rev. Tim Starnes officiating. Interment will follow in North Cleveland Cemetery.
Mr. Tedford was born in Lambert, Mississippi, on October 25, 1924, to Duke and Ruth Murphree Tedford. He was a member of the Cleveland Church of God in Cleveland. He was a farmer and a cotton ginner, and owned and operated a store in Merigold. He taught Adult Sunday School for over 60 years, served as Chaplain for the Mississippi Chapter of Gideons, International, and served in the prison ministry at Parchman. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He served in the U. S. Navy in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Duke and Ruth Murphree Tedford; son, Otha Johnson Tedford, Jr.; brothers, Eric Tedford, Wade Tedford, Clarence Tedford, and Earl Tedford.
Mr. Tedford is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlene Chism Tedford, Cleveland; daughters, Joan Annette Vargas (Julio), Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Mary Ruth Phillips (Ed), Cleveland; sister, Gladys Ann Jones (B.B.), Cleveland; brother, John Tedford, Scott; grandchildren, Robert Vargas (Tricia), Cleveland; Jason Vargas (Alex), Guatemala City, Guatemala; Jennifer Farish (Hank), Oxford; Justin Phillips (Candin), Travelers Rest, S.C., and Faith Tedford, Cleveland; great grandchildren, Addison and Landon Vargas, Cleveland.
Pallbearers will be Robert McDaniel, James "Slim" Kendall, John Walters, Oliver Greenhaw, Oscar Webster, and Bob Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Cleveland Gideon Camp.
Memorials may be made to Gideons, International , P.O. Box 1314, Cleveland, MS, or the Cleveland Church of God Youth Ministry, 4101 Highway 8, Cleveland, MS.
