Richard Garrett

Richard Linard Garrett, 72, originally of Gunnison, Mississippi, was born July 3, 1939 in Rosedale and passed from this life December 17, 2011. Visitation was held, Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Ray Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Celebration of life service was held, Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Benoit Union Church in Benoit, MS at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Floyd Cooper and Bro. Joe Cole officiating. Burial followed celebration of life service in Shelby Cemetery. He is preceded in death by his father, William Guy Garrett, his mother, Earnest McCullough Garrett, his brother, Doyle Ray Garrett, and his sister, Margaret Fay Moore. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Adair Carver Myers Garrett; 3 children, Ricky Garrett (Gaye) of Greenfield, IN, Sara Vannucci (Greg) of Cordova, TN, and Patti Gordon (Jeff) of Senatobia, MS; 5 grandchildren, Shelby, Lacey, William, Abbey, and Nicky; an aunt, Ruth McCullough Riddle of Pocahontas, AR, and nieces and nephews.
Richard was raised by the Mississippi River and grew up loving the woods, nature, and the simple things in life. He graduated with the last class of Gunnison High School in 1957. This was a close knit group of ten classmates, whom he enjoyed reuniting with many times over the years. He attended Delta State where he met his wife, Pat, and finished with a degree in Biology. They married February 16, 1962, in Jackson. He served in the Army Reserves and 35 years of his working career were spent as a sales representative for Madix, Inc.
He was a dedicated father, raising his children to be responsible and caring for others. A grandfather, who especially loved his grandchildren, took much pleasure in being "Granddaddy". A devoted husband, who enjoyed travelling with his wife, would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this coming February, 2012. He was a member of Benoit Union Church where he served as a Baptist deacon.
Richard was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He considered it a blessing when after retiring, he was able to make his home at the Benoit Outing Club, once again by the Mississippi River. He was a mentor to many young men, passing along his passion for the outdoors while teaching life lessons.
