Stuart Van Allen
Stuart Allen, devoted husband, loving grandfather and step-dad, went to be with the Lord he loved on November 18, 2019. He was born in Jackson, Ms on June 16, 1943 but said his real life began when he became a friend of Bill W. on Jan. 4, 1986.
After being given the gift of sobriety he began working at Fairland House in Clarksdale, MS. He later continued his career serving as the Alcohol and Drug Counselor for Bolivar County for 20 years. He received Master Level Certification with the MS Association of Addiction Professionals and was a member of the National Association of Addiction Professionals before his retirement. He was also the Veterans Service Officer for Bolivar County.
Stuart was a very active member of First Baptist Church Cleveland as long as he was physically able to be there and faithfully worshiped online when he could no longer attend. He was ordained as a deacon in 2002 and served many years as a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Cleveland Camp of Gideons International.
After the age of 60 Stuart began training to be a race walker and participated in many races in the state as a member of the MS Track Club. The highlight of this training was completing the St. Jude Half Marathon in Memphis, TN in 2009. Shortly after this a sudden onset of rheumatoid arthritis and related complications changed his life. He faced this change with a strong faith in God and enjoyed his God given new talent of drawing. He also loved playing Words with Friends.
Stuart is survived by his loving wife, Philene Allen, two daughters, Dr. Raanne Tindle (Allen) and Renae Ray, a precious granddaughter, Dr. Trevor Hall (Sam) and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his son, Stu Allen. He is preceded in death by parents, R. E. and Beatrice Allen and a son, Steven Allen.
A celebration of Stuart's life will be held at 10:00 Friday, November 29 at Cleveland First Baptist Church with a visitation period to follow. Mr. Allen always requested that there be no suits or ties worn at his service; therefore, please grant his wish.
Memorials may be sent to the Building Fund at First Baptist Church, 101 N Bolivar, Cleveland, MS 38732
