Suzan Cox

Suzan Hewlett Cox, a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025. Suzan was born in Greenwood on February 22, 1947 to parents Elaine and Glenn Hewlett. She was raised in Drew, Mississippi across the street from her grandmother, Estelle Harpole, whom she adored. Suzan was a daddy's girl who spent countless hours as her father's shadow in his upholstery shop in downtown Drew.

Suzan graduated from Drew High School in 1965, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen. She then attended Delta State University where she obtained her bachelor's degree in Education.

Suzan was strikingly beautiful. She loved deeply, cared deeply, and loved to laugh. Her quick wit was paired with an elegant style and Southern charm that made an impression on everyone. Her home was a reflection of her style, filled with carefully chosen items that made everyone feel welcomed and loved.

Suzan had an extraordinary talent for cooking, which she approached with nuanced perfectionism. She researched her recipes extensively and was known to scrap entire dishes and start over if they did not meet her high standards. Cooking was one of the many ways Suzan let you know that she loved you.

Suzan would tell you how proud she was of her two children, Jim and Beth, and that she had the most perfect grandchildren in the world, each having their own unique gifts and interests. She delighted in hearing about their accomplishments and adventures. Her friendships were sincere and genuine, some of which, at age 78, she had maintained since childhood. If you were lucky enough to call her a friend, you knew without a doubt you had someone in your corner who would, as she would say, "fight a circle saw" for you.

Suzan was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Elaine, and her loving husband of 29 years, William Glenn Cox. She is survived by her brother, Ron Hewlett; children Jim Blackwood (Kelly) and Beth Crowe (David); grandchildren, Cross Crowe (Emma), Gracie Belvedresi (Harden), James Blackwood, and Sam Blackwood; step-daughters Allison Parker (Lee) and Emily Geigerman (Dudley), and step-grandsons, Cole Geigerman and Nathan Cole. She is also survived by her sweetheart and confidante, Galen Givens.

In her last days, Suzan was lovingly cared for by the staff at Tallahatchie General Hospital, with whom she formed a special bond and many of whom came to love her.

Services in honor of Suzan will be held at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, Mississippi on Sunday, March 30, 2025. Visitation will commence at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Tallahatchie General Hospital Medical Foundation.
