Virginia Bailey Carpenter Birdsong, 92, of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at Bolivar Medical Center. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2013, at New Cleveland Cemetery with Bro. Barry Dickerson officiating.
Mrs. Birdsong was born in Rolling Fork, MS on December 25, 1920 to Truman T. Bailey and Lola Smith Bailey. She worked as a Secretary for Insurance agencies for 30 years. She married Edwin Burgess Carpenter on October 2, 1940. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the past president of Cleveland Jr. Auxiliary and past member of the Robinson Carpenter Library Board of Directors. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working in her yard, needlepoint and crossword puzzles.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Truman T. Bailey and Lola Smith Bailey; husbands, Edwin Burgess Carpenter and Brig. Gen. William Hubert Birdsong, Jr. (Ret).
Mrs. Birdsong is survived by son, Edwin B. Carpenter, Jr. (Kay) of Mandeville, Louisiana; daughter, Virginia Carpenter Foley (Tim) of Cleveland, MS; granddaughter, Meredith W. Carpenter of Austin, Texas; and cousin, Charline Redditt (Bill Sr.) of Cleveland.
In memory of Mrs. Birdsong, donations may be made to Robinson/ Carpenter Memorial Library and First United Methodist Church of Cleveland.
The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Clark and his staff at Cleveland Medical Clinic and her dedicated caregivers Doris, Dorothy, Angline and Ruth Ann.
