Walker H Powell

Walker was born June 8, 1944, to the late Clarence Eric (C.E.) and Mallie Powell.   Walker was baptized at Linn Baptist Church and later a member of Dockery Baptist Church.  Walker graduated from Linn High School in 1962 and Delta State University in 1966.  He loved to farm and growing up he won the 4 H tractor driving competition. In high school, he excelled in all sports and played semipro baseball in the Delta area as a center fielder after high school. He was also the girl’s cross-country coach for Delta State in the mid nineteen eighties. His love of sports carried over into adulthood.

He loved to garden and share his vegetables. He was a row crop farmer and cattle farmer. His partner in the cattle business was John Taylor. After row crop farming, he worked in the crop insurance business, and he and John had a mixed heard of cattle for many years. He was one of the first crop insurance adjusters in the Delta and grew into an expert in crop insurance. He had many friends in this business, and was most proud of his role as Southeast Regional Marketing director for Armtech where he helped grow the company sales year after year.

He married the love of his life Barbara Jean Arnold on September 12, 1964. They were married for 44 years until Barbara passed away in 2007. Walker and Barbara had 2 children, Paige Powell Pearson (Isola) and Walker Hughes Powell II (Tupelo). Paige is married to Richie Pearson. Paige has 3 children Blake Thomas Downs (deceased), Hayley Elizabeth Pearson (Isola), and Charles Eric Downs (Indianola) who is married to Mary Katherine Downs, and they have 3 children, Carter Mims Downs, Mallie Rose Downs and Audrey Katherine Downs. Walker Hughes Powell II (Tupelo) married Camille Williams Powell and they have 4 children Mallie Elizabeth Powell, Walker Hughes Powell III, Joseph Mason Powell and Anna Bishop Powell.
