Wayne Turnange Mixon

Wayne Turnage Mixon 94, passed into the presence of his Heavenly Father on August 28, 2020. The sixth child of Oliver Asbury Mixon and Velma Todd Mixon, he was born in Attala County, MS on February 23, 1926. Wayne moved with his family to the Mississippi Delta in 1932 and has made Sunflower County his home since. He served in the United States Navy during World War II stationed on the island of Guam. In 1947, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Helen Roberson, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage before her death in 2015. Wayne worked as a farmer until his retirement and as a Sunflower County road foreman for ten years following. He has been a lifelong member of Roundaway Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities. He has also been a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years. Wayne loved his family, and was a willing teacher of bike riding, fishing, tractor driving, and pea picking. He believed in hard work, and was always thinking of new ideas and projects. He believed in being a good friend and neighbor, and was always quick to lend a hand, swing a hammer, or point you to a good hunting spot. If there was anything he didn't know how to do, we never found out about it. Survivors include children: Todd Mixon (Pam) and Susan Harrell (Gayden) and grandchildren: Ion Mixon (Deena), Jill Mixon Bryars (Paul), John Harrell (Haley), David Harrell (Henley), Stephen Harrell (Josephine), Susanna Harrell, Sarah Harrell. Great-grandchildren: Micah Mixon, Morgan Mixon, Miriam Mixon, Cooper Harrell, Stella Harrell, Isaac Harrell, and Jacob Wayne Harrell. Surviving sisters are Lillie Jo Kersh (Juinor), Billie Wilson, and Beverly Nobile along with numerous nieces and nephews. Special commendation goes to his devoted caregivers who assisted him so faithfully in his last years including Faye Holloway, Doris Pembleton, Yolanda Farrow, and Victoria Sheads. Memorial gifts may be made to the Roundaway Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
