Mrs. Winnie Lee Walker, 91, of Madison, formerly of Shaw, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016, at her daughter's home in Madison. Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at Ray Funeral Home, Cleveland, MS. Celebration of Life services will immediately follow beginning at 10:00 a.m., at Ray Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Clark and Rev. LaJoy Touchstone officiating. Internment will follow in Shaw Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker was born on March 30, 1925, to Charlie Green Walker and Mary Celia "Molly" Little Walker, in Mize, Mississippi, and moved to the Delta at age 5. On June 18, 1947, she married James William "J.W." Walker in Cleveland, MS, and they were married 62 years. She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Church of God where she was actively involved teaching Sunday School, working with the youth, and Ladies Missions. She was also a member of Shaw Ladies American Legion having served as President, Vice-President, and Secretary. She loved cooking and planning get-togethers with family and friends. Everybody always felt welcomed in her and J. W.'s home. She enjoyed sewing, working in her yard, flowers, and decorating her home. She greatly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Following her husband's death, she was a resident for four years at The Waterford in Ridgeland where she made many new friends. She will be missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; brothers, Gaston Walker, Willard Walker, Joe Walker, and Charles Walker; and sisters, Velma Baker, Verna Bailey, and Annie Walker (infant).
Mrs. Walker is survived by her daughter, Sandra W. Hanks (James) of Madison; granddaughter, Mauri H. Hart of Olive Branch; grandson, Darren S. Hanks of Brandon, MS; great-grandchildren, James Bryan Hart, Walker Josephine Hart, and Leland Frederick Hart of Olive Branch; and Anna Lorise Hanks and Molly Katherine Hanks of Brandon, MS, along with numerous beloved extended family members.
Pallbearers will be Billy Walker, Kenneth Walker, Timmy Walker, Leon Ragland, Chuck Tackett, and Hagen Ware.
The family requests in memory of Mrs. Walker, donations be made to the Disabled Veterans, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
